Oxford Cathedral

 Oxford Cathedral

When, in 1546, Henry VIII moved the first Bishop of Oxford into the church, he created a unique institution, ‘Christ Church’, for its chapel is also Oxford Cathedral

The Cathedral was originally the church of St Frideswide’s Priory, which was surrendered to Cardinal Wolsey in 1522.

The site of the Cathedral is assumed to be the site of the nunnery founded by St Frideswide, the patron saint of Oxford, whose shrine is in the Latin Chapel.
