2018 Week 1 Course 4

Byron: Romantic and Comic

Philip Healy

Week 1

1 - 7 July 2018

‘Mad, bad and dangerous to know’, Lord Byron (1788-1824) is the archetypal English Romantic poet. He became famous overnight with the publication of Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage – its brooding, self-engrossed, wandering protagonist was everyone’s idea of a poet. His tumultuous private life, dramatic political dedication to Greek Independence and death at Missolonghi confirmed the picture. Yet Byron is also one of the greatest comic poets in English, as is seen in his unfinished masterpiece, Don Juan. His letters reflect the same humorous side of his personality. The course will explore all aspects of his literary achievement.
