From Rasputin to Putin: The Russian Enigma

Less than 100 years ago, Russia was almost the last absolute monarchy in the Western world. That was swept away by a revolution which aimed to change not just government but human nature. The Russian people paid an enormous price for the grand ambition of their rulers. For 70 years they lived with the threat - or promise - of communism. Today Russia again seems to be competing successfully with the world but this time as a capitalist state. But nothing in Russia is or was ever quite what it seems. Winston Churchill described Russia as a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma. Will outsiders ever be able to unravel the reality at its heart?
