Art and Literature in the Far West

Rikky Rooksby

Week 1

1 - 7 July 2018

The recent popular BBC series Poldark has showcased the beauty and magic of Cornwall, with its wild moors, sandy bays, fishing villages, and mysterious Celtic atmosphere.

Using film, images, music and texts, this course explores that magic. It features fiction by Hardy, Woolf, Du Maurier, and Helen Dunmore, and poetry by Swinburne, Causley, Betjeman and others on Cornish and Arthurian themes. These texts will be examined for their literary qualities and relationship to Cornwall. The course also surveys a variety of painting in Cornwall, including the Newlyn School and the sculpture of Barbara Hepworth, and outlines the county’s geography, history and cultural heritage. Discover why and how this county has provided so much inspiration for creative people.
