Rachmaninoff: His Life and Music

Jonathan Darnborough

Claire-Louise Lucas

Week 2

8 - 14 July 2018

The music of Rachmaninoff is amongst the most popular in the repertoire. His deeply romantic style combines sweeping melody with harmonies of great richness, imbued with an unmistakeably Russian character – poignant and deeply expressive. Nonetheless the seemingly spontaneous passionate outpourings are made possible by a compositional craftsmanship that is second to none.

In this course we will be following Rachmaninoff’s career, from the student protegé of Tchaikovsky through to the self-imposed exile of his later years after the Russian revolution. As we do so we shall be studying many of his works, charting his creative development and seeking to understand the relationship between his compositional craft and the passion that is so evident in everything that he wrote.
