2018 Week 2 Course 11

Shakespeare's Medieval World

Darren Ormandy

Week 2

8 - 14 July 2018

Why does the Chorus in Henry V call for ‘a muse of fire?’ What deeper significance lies behind ‘All the world’s a stage?’

Shakespeare is rightly seen as the greatest playwright of early modern England. But the England he lived in, the theatrical tradition he inherited, the very streets he walked in, were rooted in the past. This course will look at how the medieval world influenced Shakespeare, offering a deeper understanding of his familiar plays as well as an introduction to the rich, comical, and sometimes haunting medieval literature that inspired him.
