2018 Week 2 Course 3

Chaucer's Canterbury Tales: Journeying Onward

Roger Dalrymple

Week 2

8 - 14 July 2018

The high-point of late medieval English storytelling, Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales enjoys a central place in the canon of English literature and exerts an ongoing influence on literary tradition. After a look at the General Prologue and selected tales in their original historical and linguistic contexts, this course will explore the ways in which Chaucer and his works continue to journey onward through different artistic traditions including visual and dramatic arts.

Our exploration of Chaucer’s work and its legacy will include fourteenth-century historical context; Gothic art and medieval aesthetics; depictions of Chaucer’s pilgrims in visual arts and music; and the continuity of the Chaucerian sensibility in English literary tradition.
