2018 Week 2 Course 6

Hersey, Crusade and Inquisition in

Southern France, 1150-1250

Michael Sibly

Week 2

8 - 14 July 2018

This course covers the dramatic story of the growth and destruction of the Cathar heresy in southern France in the 12th and 13th centuries. Catharism (and other heresies) were seen as a major threat by the Catholic Church. After the failure of preaching efforts against them, the Albigensian Crusade was launched in 1208-09 by Pope Innocent III to eradicate the alleged supporters of heresy amongst the nobility of the south. The course looks at the origins and nature of heresy, the course of the Crusade, and its short and long term outcomes, including the establishment of the medieval inquisition.
