Week 3

15 - 21 July 2018

Shakespeare’s plays have inspired over 270 operas including some of the greatest masterpieces in the repertoire. Whilst some Shakespearean operas date from the 17th and 18th centuries the majority were composed in the Romantic and Modern eras, born of a growing awareness of Shakespeare in Europe from the 19th century onwards.

This course explores the relationship between Shakespeare’s dramas and the operas based, more or less closely, upon them. We will survey the whole field of Shakespearean opera but concentrate on those works that have taken their place in the mainstream repertory, especially the three great contributions composed by Giuseppe Verdi.
