2018 Week 3 Course 4

George Eliot's Middlemarch

Val Dodd

Week 3

15 - 21 July 2018

“One of the great books of the world” in the opinion of R.H.Hutton. This course seeks to untangle the complex web of “Middlemarch”. We will look at the autobiographical, literary and historical context of the novel to see how it may aid understanding of the work. We will also examine Eliot’s treatment of the themes of religion, work and money, love, marriage and women, and politics. In conclusion, we will assess the novel in relation to Henry James’s tantalising question, “If we write novels so, how shall we write History?” and consider the extent to which Eliot’s intellectuality strengthens or weakens her writing.
