2018 Week 3 Course 7

Life in a Medieval Village

Stephen Mileson

Week 3

15 - 21 July 2018

This course explores village life in England during the later Middle Ages (1200-1500). Students will investigate peasant communities through archaeology, maps and field-names as well as documents and literary evidence. An introduction to the institutional framework of manor and parish will be followed by sessions on domestic life and work and social activities in the village and beyond. Attention will be paid to the changes unleashed by the Black Death, to conflict between lords and peasants, and to tensions amongst richer and poorer villagers. A field trip to Ewelme will offer hands-on experience, while the final session will provide the opportunity to reflect on the legacy of medieval rural life for the modern world.
