2018 Week 4 Course 1

British Spies in Fact and Fiction

Kees Windland

Week 4

22 - 28 July 2018

This course will explore the murky world of British espionage from the foundation of the Secret Service Bureau in 1909 to the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and the Security Service (MI5) of the early 21st century. Particular attention will be given to activities during the Cold War with special focus on the notorious affair of the so-called ‘Cambridge Spies’. Concurrently, we will trace the evolution of the British spy in fiction through the twentieth century. Through a conjunction of historical and imaginative recreations of the spy’s world we will develop a clearer understanding of the shifting political and cultural significances of espionage in late modern and post-modern Britain.
