Landscapes of the Norman Conquest

The Norman Conquest is rightly viewed as a major turning point in English history. It also had a profound impact on the English landscape. In this course we will examine landscapes associated with the Normans, starting with the disputed site of the Battle of Hastings. Colonial landscapes such as that of the Welsh Marches will be examined We will also look at those towns such as Durham, Canterbury and Winchester, which were fundamentally altered after 1066. The will be a field trip to the Welsh Marches.
