Alison McDonald

Week 5

29 July - 4 August 2018

Using the buildings of ancient Rome as a starting point, we will investigate the lifestyles of the people who lived in the city during the Roman Imperial period. What activities took place in the forum, in the heart of the city? Where were the markets and how did they operate? How was the Colosseum constructed and what is so striking about its design? Why were only priests allowed inside the temples and what sort of rituals took place outside them? What did people’s houses look like?

Anicent Rome was a busy, noisy metropolis and on this Summer School we will examine some of the most interesting buildings, monuments and associated archaeological evidence from the capitial of the Roman empire.
