2018 Week 6 Course 2

Castles of Britain

Trevor Rowley

Week 6

5 - 11 August 2018

The castle was introduced to Britain by William the Conqueror. In this course we will trace the development of the castle from the timber and earth castles of the Normans, through the great stone castles of the Middle Ages, to the revival of castle building in the Victorian era. We will examine the way in which the castle changed in form over the centuries from a purely defensive fortification to the grand residential palaces of the Tudors and the high status residences of the nineteenth century. There will be field trips to visit castles at Oxford, Chepstow and White Castle in Wales.
