2018 Week 6 Course 3

The Coming of Arthur:

The Story of King Arthur in Text and Image

Victoria Condie

Week 6

5 - 11 August 2018

The stories of King Arthur and his knights have long appealed to the imagination. Concentrating on key texts such as Malory’s Morte Darthur and Tennyson’s Idylls of the King and on the art of the Pre-Raphaelites, we shall follow the development of Arthurian literature from its legendary beginnings in the Middle Ages through to the present day, exploring the ways in which authors and artists responded to the Arthurian story in relation to their own time and culture. We shall conclude by looking at Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in the Court of King Arthur and Arthurian text and image in the present day with particular reference to women writers of Arthurian fiction. The Glastonbury visit will contextualise our discussions.
