Macaronis,Merchants and the Mob

Kate Watson

Week 6

5 - 11 August 2018

In this course we will examine the nature of life in Georgian England, a magnificently turbulent era of dynamic growth and change, from the impact of industrialisation to the rise of the Prime Minister. We will explore the vibrancy of Georgian society at all levels, and the ways in which this was portrayed, from the bustling world of trade, and the scandalous delights of the elites, to the daily perils of life in the underclass. We will also consider the impact of social change on England’s domestic and international concerns, from the emergence of popular politics to the growth of crime. Throughout we will pay particular attention to depictions of society in contemporary print, especially satire and caricature.
